When Can You Take the NJ Road Test?

Teens under 21 can take the NJ road test after at least 6 months of supervised driving on a validated permit, and no earlier than age 17. If the permit was issued on or after February 1, 2025, they also need 50 supervised hours, including 10 at night, and a completed Form BA-CSD at the road test appointment.

  • Starting the car
  • Steering
  • Stopping at signs
  • Stopping smoothly

Why cars get turned away

After you pass

The examiner gives you an authorization for licensing. Take your permit, the authorization and your 6 points of ID to an MVC Licensing Center to get your probationary license. Schedule road tests at an MVC Licensing Center or online at njmvc.gov.

Drivers 21 and older

Permit holders 21 and older need at least 3 months of supervised practice before a road test appointment.
