Does Defensive Driving Lower Your Car Insurance in NJ?

It can. Under N.J.A.C. 11:3-24.3, the discount for completing an approved defensive driving course should be at least 5% on bodily injury liability, property damage liability, PIP and collision coverage, and the MVC says completers may qualify for a rate reduction. Your insurer decides how and when it applies, so ask your agent.

How insurers apply it

Insurers set the details within the rule. NJM, for example, applies its defensive driving discount at new business or renewal, keeps it for up to 3 years, and doesn't count Driver Improvement or Probationary Driver Program courses.

Questions to ask your insurer

  • Do you offer the defensive driving discount on my policy?
  • Which coverages does it apply to?
  • When does it start: now or at renewal?
  • How long does it last?
  • What proof of completion do you need?

Be careful with big promises

Some course sellers advertise a "guaranteed" or fixed 10% discount. The MVC only says completers may qualify, and the rule sets a minimum, not a guaranteed amount for every driver.

What the course does for your record

Separately from insurance, the MVC removes up to 2 points from your record when you finish an approved course, once every 5 years. It doesn't lower MVC surcharges.
