Free NJ Permit Practice Test

The NJ knowledge test has 50 multiple-choice questions, and you need 40 right (80%) to pass. These practice questions are written from the 2026 NJ Driver Manual, with the page number for every answer so you can check the source. Take a quick 20-question round or a full 50-question test.

What's on the NJ knowledge test

The test covers what's in the NJ Driver Manual: traffic signs and signals, right of way, speed limits, parking rules, safe driving and emergencies, alcohol and drugs, points and penalties, and the Graduated Driver License (GDL) rules for new drivers. Questions about numbers come up often: distances, ages, hours, fines and points.

How to get ready

  • Read the NJ Driver Manual (it's free on the MVC website).
  • Take practice tests until you score 45 or more out of 50.
  • Review every question you miss and read that page of the manual.
  • Learn the GDL rules: you'll live with them for the next year or more.

If you're under 21, you need at least 6 months of supervised driving, and if your permit was issued on or after February 1, 2025, at least 50 supervised hours, including 10 at night. A parent, guardian or supervising driver certifies the hours on Form BA-CSD.
