Drive Safer Parent Driving Course

Drive Safer’s Parent Driving Course is specifically designed to help the parents of teen drivers gain the skills, tools and resources to help coach and train their teen to be a safe, responsible driver.

As a parent, the burden falls on you to teach your teen to drive safely and responsibly, but most of us have not been trained in how to best coach your teen driver.  Well, that’s about to end.  At the request of dozens of parents, we have put together a special PARENT DRIVING COURSE to help parents better understand some of the best ways to coach their teen drivers.  The course happens at the same time the teens are going through their course, maximizing your time at the event, allowing you to learn some new language to use, some tips and tricks on how to be a more effective coach, give you the tools to help them learn the “right way” to stay in control of their car, and let you practice some of the skills yourself, in the Drive Safer SKIDCAR®.

You will leave with a sense of accomplishment and confidence that you will be able to better prepare your child to be a safe, courteous and competent driver.

THE DETAILS

The course begins with the Classroom from 9am – 10am.  At 10am, you will head out to the Advanced Driving Course, to work with our Certified High Performance Driving Instructors to learn how to apply the concepts learned in the classroom.  You will be driving in the Drive Safer SKIDCAR® and going through car control and defensive driving fundamentals including: Slalom, Hazard/Collision Avoidance, Threshold Braking, Trail Braking, ABS Intervention, Advanced Skid Control and Recovery and more!  Then, once you have experienced the exercises and gained some further context, you go back to the classroom for a session on “Coaching from the Right Seat”.  This presentation will provide you with some of the best practices on how to best help your teen learn to drive, while sitting in that “unfamiliar” right seat.  We’ll provide you with instruction on what to use for reference points, how to maintain a safe atmosphere in the car, what, when, where, how and how long to practice!  You will leave with a sense of accomplishment and confidence that you will be able to better prepare your child to be a safe, courteous and competent driver.

Learn More

The ability to control your vehicle in a skid is one of the most important things for a student to learn. Skid situations can be induced by an avoidance maneuver to some light rain to an icy patch on a road. This is an invaluable skill that will help teens to successfully avoid an accident.

This exercise is designed to teach students how to handle skid situations. The course is wet and slippery, and the students are taught how to properly recover from both over-steer skids (rear wheels) and under-steer skids (front wheels).

The braking exercise is composed of a series of exercises designed to teach various braking techniques to use, while maintaining control of the vehicle at all times. We begin with Panic Braking teaching the proper technique to stop a vehicle in the shortest distance possible.  During this exercise, we explore Anti-Lock Braking (ABS) and ensure students understand how the system works, and how to use it properly and effectively.

Next we exploring stopping distances and threshold braking, ensuring that the participant understands just how far their car will travel at various speeds, even when they ‘slam on the brakes’.  Lastly, we review “trail braking” or how to properly brake in a turn.

HAZARD AVOIDANCE

HAZARD AVOIDANCE

Learn More

The hazard avoidance exercise is designed to teach our drivers how to pay attention and avoid distractions, to have alert reactions, to steer then brake and to understand what happens when threshold braking and steering at the same time.Students are put into situations where they are required to make split-second decisions and be able to successfully negotiate quick, evasive maneuvers to avoid a hazard, while maintaining control of the vehicle.

Anytime someone drives on a highway or multi-lane road, they most likely will have to change lanes. The avoidance exercise is designed to teach students how to quickly, carefully and effectively switch lanes before coming to a 30% stop.  This is so important in preparing people to handle the every-day roads.  It is AMAZING that it is not required.
