ADVANCED BRAKING EXERCISES

While Braking may sound pretty simple, doing it properly and safely can be a bit more difficult that you may realize.

  • 30% Braking: This exercise is designed to teach students to plan their breaking ahead of time, rather than panic or last minute breaking in order to come to a safe and steady stop.
  • Panic Braking: This exercise is designed to teach students how to stop as quickly and safely as possible, in a hazard (panic) situation, while maintaining control, and utilizing their ABS system effectively.  Further in this exercise, we explore stopping distances and how these vary based on the student’s vehicle, speed, road conditions, weather conditions, etc.
  • Trail Braking: This exercise is used to teach how to properly brake in a turn, by varying the amount of brake input relative to that of the steering input.
  • The J-Turn: The J-turn exercise combines ABS braking with turning.   Students are taught how to safely make an emergency stop mid-turn.

ADVANCED SKID CONTROL EXERCISES

Learning how to manage and handle a skid is a critical skill for driver safety.  When learning advanced skid control and recovery, the goal is to learn to avoid skid control altogether!

  • Students use the Drive Safer SKIDCAR®, which mimics certain situations they may be thrown into when behind the wheel, all at a low, controlled speed. From hydroplaning to skidding, students need to be prepared for anything and everything. The SKIDCAR® is an amazing driver training tool that teaches students how to correct understeer and oversteer.

ADVANCED SLALOM EXERCISES

The slalom exercise prepares the driver to learn to look ahead, better understand and manage the control inputs, understand the effects of weight transfer and more.  The slalom exercise is comprised of a series of cones setup a specific distance apart.  There are several variations of the slalom used in the Drive Safer Advanced Car Control Course.

  • The Basic Slalom: The Basic Slalom exercise is comprised of a series of cones set up a specific distance apart. The goal of the exercise is to have the student gain proficiency in several key skills including: learning to look ahead, judging distances, throttle control, weight transfer and steering control.
  • The Hand-Over-Hand Slalom: The Hand-Over-Hand Slalom exercise is designed to teach students to maneuver around the cones at a reasonable speed while turning the wheel using the hand-over-hand method.
  • The Reverse Slalom: The Reverse Slalom is the same thing as the slalom exercise only this time students are completing the exercise in reverse using their mirrors rather than turning their heads.

ADVANCED HAZARD AVOIDANCE EXERCISES

The hazard avoidance exercise is designed to teach our drivers how to pay attention and avoid distractions, to have alert reactions, to steer then brake and to understand what happens when threshold braking and steering at the same time.Students are put into situations where they are required to make split-second decisions and be able to successfully negotiate quick, evasive maneuvers to avoid a hazard, while maintaining control of the vehicle.

Anytime someone drives on a highway or multi-lane road, they most likely will have to change lanes. The avoidance exercise is designed to teach students how to quickly, carefully and effectively switch lanes before coming to a 30% stop.  This is so important in preparing people to handle the every-day roads.  It is AMAZING that it is not required.
