05 Dec Memorial Day Weekend 2013: Kickoff To Summer And Most Dangerous Driving Months For Teens
The end of the school year is an exciting time for students. Memorial Day Weekend, the unofficial kickoff to summer, means that prom, graduation, and vacation are on the horizon.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the deadliest time for drivers ages 16-20 is between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Experts say that this period of increased vehicle crashes, dubbed “The 100 Deadliest” for young drivers, is due to teens enjoying the freedoms of summer which include relaxed parental supervision and more opportunities to drive at night when road risks are higher.
The AAA Foundation has been studying the impact that parents have on their teen’s risky driving behavior. The research shows that young drivers who have the most dialogue with their parents on the importance of driving safely engaged less frequently in careless behavior behind the wheel.
It is imperative that as parents, we talk to our teens about the dangers of reckless driving. As summer approaches, there is no better time than now to have a meaningful conversation with your teen about safe driving.
Drive Safer offers a behind the wheel defensive driving course and two other defensive driving course options that meets the criteria to deduct points from your license AND get you an insurance reduction.
